President Murray Park at Night

Posted in personal shoots by Hemant Naidu on February 7, 2010

Last week Saskatoon got a decent amount of snow leaving treacherous driving conditions, but great photo opportunities. The temperature was quite mild on Tuesday night so I went out to take some night shots at President Murray Park near the University of Saskatchewan. I typically do not take landscape type shots, let alone at night so I was looking forward to playing around.

On my drive to the park I unfortunately got rear-ended thanks to the extremely icy streets. This could have ended up ruining my plans for the evening, but I took comfort in knowing that no one was hurt, and that I wasn’t at fault so I continued along my way to the park. I spent about an hour walking around taking various shots only making use of available light. Despite the terrible start to the evening I think I ended up finishing on a high note with some beautiful shots of Murray Park at night.

Concrete Wave Ad Shoot for DangerDynamite!

Posted in shoots by Hemant Naidu on January 29, 2010

Back in early December I met with Frank Collins, founder of the Saskatoon web design company DangerDynamite!. He had twelve months of advertisement space to fill in the popular skateboarding print magazine Concrete Wave so he was looking at getting some shots for that purpose. Since it was a skate magazine he wanted to make the advertisement relevant to the readership, but there was a bit of a problem since Saskatoon was in the dead of winter.

Frank and I discussed some concepts, and he thought the idea of capturing “skateboarding in the off-season in Saskatchewan” would capture what he was going for. We scheduled a shoot so that we could make his deadline, but our luck was terrible – we were in the middle of a major cold spell when the date finally rolled around.

We had no choice so we decided to go for it. We made our way to the Lions Riverside Skatepark despite the bitterly cold -35 degrees celsius temperature and got through the photo-shoot as quickly as possible. We wrapped things up and headed back to our vehicles. After saying good-bye to Frank I was feeling a little uncomfortable that we had rushed through the shots. I decided to go back out and fire off a few more frames just to be sure.

You can see the Concrete Wave Advertisement Shoot gallery here. The latest issue of the magazine has started running the ads featuring the photos shot by Naidu Photography, so be sure to check it out at your favourite bookstore.

Stephen Maguire Private Concert at Loft 420

On December 3rd, 2010 Stephen Maguire played a private concert at Loft 420 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The Belfast, Northern Ireland native played an acoustical set for an intimate crowd, covering a number of songs from his upcoming album Irish Soul. During his Saskatchewan tour Stephen accompanied five-time Grammy award winner B.J. Thomas. He is also looking forward to an upcoming performance at the 2010 Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival, opening for another Grammy award winner Nanci Griffith.

Naidu Photography was graced with the opportunity to document this event, capturing shots of Stephen’s gripping performance, and an audience enjoying every moment of it. Stephen liked the shots so much that one of them now graces the main page of his official website.

Fear Salesman Promo Shots

Posted in shoots by Hemant Naidu on January 23, 2010

Nate Heagy recently made international news with a marketing idea for his band Fear Salesman. When the Google Street View Car made it’s way through the streets of Saskatoon last summer Nate made sure that he was in its sights. Six months later when Street View went live in Saskatoon Nate quickly verified that his idea had paid off. Pictured on the side of the road is Nate, his guitar, and a big Fear Salesman sign.

It wasn’t long before news organizations caught wind of this little marketing ploy and the interviews started to roll in for Nate. That’s where Naidu Photography entered the picture. Nate was starting to be asked for media packages and he didn’t have any decent shots of himself. He asked for my help and I was happy to oblige. We scheduled a quick shoot and created some great shots.
